In the Bible, we read a lot about the “Law,” such as the Law of the Old Testament, the Mosaic Law, the Lord’s Law, the Ten Commandments, the Law of burnt offerings, the Law of sacrifices, all the Old Covenant Laws, and the Law of Truth. There were six hundred and thirteen Laws to be exact. The Hebrew Word for law is “Torah” a precept or statute, especially the Decalogue or Pentateuch:- law. (Strong’s Greek & Hebrew Dictionary). God’s laws were important to the Israelites. It was to be followed to have God’s blessings. It dealt with sin, morals, relationships, ceremonial, domestic, and civic issues. There were curses and blessings. Deuteronomy 17:18-20 (NKJV)-18 “Also it shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book, from the one before the priests, the Levites.19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes,20 that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children in the midst of Israel. The role of Law is to administrate the covenant. Laws prohibit things destructive to a relationship with God (e.g., worshiping other gods). The law directs what a loving response to God should be and tells how to reap the full benefits of the relationship.
In the New Covenant or New Testament, we hear things like the Law of Faith, the Law of Sin and Death, the Law working in our members, and the Law of My Mind. The Royal Law, the Perfect Law of Liberty, the Law of Christ, the Curse of the Law, and the Works of the Law. We also hear of the Law of Righteousness and the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. There are also laws of science and nature, as well as physical and spiritual laws. They work for everyone. They are not prejudiced, such as the law of gravity, the law of electricity, and the law of aerodynamics or lift. Laws are constant, fixed, and binding. Laws are principles and rules and they are universal. God put these Laws into effect in creation. Some Laws were never learned, discovered, or benefited until centuries later. There are also spiritual laws and why are they so important?
Apostle Paul refers to the Torah, the five books of Moses many times in Romans, Galatians, and other New Testament writings. In Romans, he mentions the Law of Faith. Romans 3:27-28 (NKJV)27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. The Apostle says the Law of Faith supersedes the Torah because the Old Testament Law can’t justify man before God. The Torah showed our inability to be justified before God. The Law of Faith is at work in this dispensation of grace. We are not placing our trust in our good works but in Christ. The Nomos, (the Greek word for Law) of Faith can work for everyone who believes. It is constant, fixed, and binding. That is the Gospel of good news! ( Rom 1:16-17). The Law of Faith has moved into our hearts rather than outward observance of the Torah. The Torah leads us to Christ and Faith in Him. Jeremiah 31:33 (NKJV)-33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
The Law of Faith is a spiritual law or principle. Like the Law of electricity for it to be effective, we must cooperate with it for it to benefit us. Why does Apostle Paul call it the Law of Faith? He is contrasting the observance of the Torah with the Law of Faith. Ephesians 2:7-9 (NKJV)-7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. The spiritual Law of Faith or the ruling force of faith operates by God’s grace, not by works. Faith is our loving response to God’s grace. Grace is God’s part. Faith is our part. I was always a performance type of Christian. My life was driven by the need to pray, read the Bible more, and witness to everyone I met. Of course, going to Church and being in fellowship with other Christians was also important. I always found myself coming up short and frustrated. I was thinking if I do all the right things I will walk in the favor and blessings of God. I was putting faith in my faith. The focus was on me rather than what God did for me through Christ. There was no real rest of faith. I was striving to do all the right things. All those things I mentioned are important for maturing in Christ. Yet it is Faith that pleases God ( Heb 11:6, Heb 4:1-3).
The Law of faith must be a strong influence, a ruling force, or a principal in our lives. How are you saved, healed, justified, and declared righteous? Is it by the Law of faith or works of the Law? Galatians 3:5 (NKJV)-5 Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?– ( Rom 10:17). Every Born Again Christian receives the measure of faith to operate in (Rom 12:3, 2 Cor 4:13, Gal 2:20). The principle of the Law of Faith is total trust in what Christ has accomplished for us in redemption. We can’t be saved by obedience to the “Torah“. Romans 4:14 (NKJV)-14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, and in Romans 3:28 (NKJV)-28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. Apostle Paul reinforces this in Galatians 5:4 (NKJV)-4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. What a blessing to know the grace of Christ and experience the salvation He offers to those who will receive it by faith and believe. Romans 10:4 (NKJV)-4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
In conclusion: If we approach God it must be on His terms and not ours. If we are to partake of His promises it must be by His terms or principles of faith. We can’t approach God based on good intentions, feelings, emotions, or works. It is believing rather than achieving. It is not based on our merits but on Christ. Our boasting is in Christ and not in ourselves or good works. This is God’s new system of receiving salvation. The Law of faith like the law of electricity will work for us if we cooperate with God’s spiritual laws. Jesus responded to the women with the issue of blood by saying,” Your faith has made you whole.” ( Matt 9:22). The Law of faith is like copper wire in electricity. It is the best conductivity for current to pass through. In the book of Romans, Apostle Paul tells us that the Just shall live by faith( Rom 1:17). It is the best conductivity for the blessing of God to flow in our lives. Let us continue to build our lives and grow in the Law of faith.
Colossians 2:6-7 (NKJV)-6 As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. (Jude 20)
